个人简介
Dr. Viswatej “Vishu” Avutu graduated summa cum laude from the University of Texas Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the Dean’s Scholars Honors Program. While there, he completed his honors thesis in the lab of Andrew Ellington, PhD and the American Chemical Society-German Academic Exchange Service’s Research Internship in Science and Engineering at the Universitat Hamburg. Given his accomplishments, he was named a Dean’s Honored Graduate, the highest honor bestowed by the College of Natural Sciences.
Vishu was then accepted to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where he attained his Doctor of Medicine and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He began his clinical research endeavors through the Pediatric Oncology Education Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; finding a passion for working with adolescents and young adults, Vishu matched to the combined internal medicine-pediatric residency at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s/Boston Children’s Hospitals. In addition to serving as Chief Resident, Vishu developed the Perspective-Inspired Transition Curriculum for Housestaff, a novel curriculum to educate residents and medical students about transition medicine, earning him multiple grants and awards, including the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine’s Innovation Grant, Johns Hopkins General Internal Medicine’s Barker-Kern Award and the Allen C. Crocker Advocacy Fellowship. Furthermore, he is a graduate of the Harvard Macy Institute's Future Academic Clinician-Educators Program and was elected to the Education Leadership Committees at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Partners HealthCare and the Academy for Teaching and Educational Innovation and Scholarship at Boston Children's Hospital.
Deciding to focus on adolescents and young adults with cancer, he helped develop and launch the Center for Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This led him to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he is currently a medical oncology fellow, splitting his time between the Medical and Pediatric Sarcoma Groups. He is a co-founder and member of the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program, where his work has garnered the Patient and Family Centered Care Grant Initiative.
