Bio
I am Vinh Phu Nguyen. I got a PhD from the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) in the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geoscienses, under the supervision of Prof. Lambertus Johannes Sluys. My PhD was about multiscale failure modelling of quasi-brittle materials like concrete using advanced discontinuous computational homogenization methods.
I was introduced to the field of computational mechanics by Profs. Hung Nguyen-Dang and Stephane Bordas within the framework of the EMMC master program (2003-2005). I have spent one year in Saint Etienne (February 2006 to April 2007), France in an attempt to implement 3D PUFEM into the commercial FEM package SYSTUS of ESI company.
After my PhD I have been to a couple of different places (Johns Hopkins University, Cardiff University and The University of Adelaide) before joining Monash University (Clayton, Australia) as a lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering in 2016.
Experienced in continuum damage models (gradient types or nonlocal ones), cohesive crack models with (discontinuous Galerkin based) interface elements and PUFEM/XFEM, multilevel FEM (FE2) methods for multiscale material modelling. I also have some experience in the Discrete Element Method (DEM) applied to cement hydration modelling. I have been working on some meshfree/particle methods including Element Free Galerkin (EFG) and particularly Material Point Method (MPM) for large strain problems. I am the author of MIGFEM--a Matlab Isogeometric Bubnov-Galerkin Finite Element Method for (cracked) solids and structures.
