Bio
A. Personal Statement
I am a psychologist by training and a Professor of Psychology, in the Department of Clinical Psychology at the University of Rwanda (UR). I am also the Acting Director of the Centre for Mental Health, College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS). I specialize in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and child and adolescent traumatic grief. In particular, I have conducted research on trauma and bereavement among young survivors of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda. I have conducted several research studies and have developed scientific protocols on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complicated Grief (CG) treatment. My ongoing research assesses the effectiveness of these treatment protocols within the population of traumatized survivors of the 1994 genocide. As a professor, I specialize in teaching psychopathology, Cognitive and Behavioral approaches to psychotherapy, Personality theories, and grief and mourning. I have also been a contributor to social service workforce development in Rwanda and abroad.
B.Contributions to Science
My extensive work in mental health has included the impact of HIV/AIDS on children’s mental health. In particular, mental health issues and protective factors for HIV-affected children include those living with HIV+ caregivers, and those who are HIV+ themselves. I have collaborated on a study that utilized the Family Strengthening Intervention (FSI) which aims to reduce mental health problems among HIV-affected children through improved child-caregiver relationships, family communication, and parenting skills. Additionally, I collaborated on a study examining the differences in mental health issues and resiliency in children living with HIV+ caregivers, children who are HIV+ and children who are unaffected by HIV. We discovered that HIV-affected children have higher levels of depression, anxiety, conduct problems, and functional impairment compared with HIV unaffected children. This work has shed light on the mental health issues which reside within the context of HIV/AIDS and the importance of further research in this area. The below publications represent findings from these studies.

With a specialty in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Child and Adolescent Traumatic Grief (CG), I have conducted research and developed protocols aimed at addressing PTSD and CG. Among these protocols, I developed treatment on rumination change and its effects on PTSD prevalence. In particular, my research in this area has focused on assessing the effectiveness of treatment protocols’ within the population of multi-traumatized survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Below are samples of publications focused on the impact of the genocide and PTSD, CG, and resilience amongst survivors.
