个人简介
I obtained a Bachelor Degree in Biochemistry (UAB, 1996) and a PhD in Biochemistry (UB, 2002) with a "Cum Laude" grade. I was awarded during my PhD with a fellowship from the AECC and by a FPI fellowship (Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture). During my PhD I studied the role of the t-PA protease in pancreatic cancer cells proliferation, invasion and angiogenesis (supervisor Dr. R. Paciucci) at the Hospital Vall d’Hebron. My contribution of this period was summarized in 7 publications, 3 as a first-author: Gastroenterology, 2002; Gut, 2004 and Exp Cell Research, 2006. The paper in Gut (IF= 9,766) is one of the most cited of my CV (97 citations) and that in Gastroenterology is the one with the highest impact factor (IF: 12,591). I was also PhD visiting fellow at the Department of Cell Biology in the New York University at 2000 and I obtained a patent to generate t-PA inhibitors at the end of my thesis.
After finishing my PhD, I moved to Dr. Blasi’s laboratory in Milan (San Raffaele Hospital, Department of Biotechnology, DIBIT) from 2003-2006 as a “Marie Curie” postdoctoral fellow funded by the UE. During my postdoc, I studied the role of homeobox proteins during mouse development and obtained 7 publications, 2 as a first-author. At that time I was interested in isolating high molecular weight complexes under native conditions in order to decipher their composition by using proteomics (Díaz VM et al., Proteomics, 2007). As consequence of these studies we manage to obtain a new Prep1 interactor named p160-MBP with important implications in regulating Hoxb1 gene expression (Díaz VM et al., Mol. Cell Biology, 2007).
In 2006 I came back to Spain for a second postdoc (2006-2009) funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Culture at Dr. Antonio García de Herreros’ laboratory (IMIM-Hospital del Mar). I focused on the role of Snail1 in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during cancer progression to elucidate the formation of protein complexes of Snail1 with Polycomb proteins (Mol. Cell Biology, 2008). I became independent researcher analyzing Snail1 protein stability during EMT and directed my first PhD student, Rosa Viñas-Castells who worked under my supervision characterizing a new ubiquitin ligase for Snail1 called FBXL14 (first corresponding author paper at J. Biol. Chem., 2010; cited 100 times so far).
In 2010, I gained a Lecturer position at Pompeu Fabra University (CEXS-UPF). Since 2010 to date I have accumulated more than 1300 hours of teaching Biochemistry for graduate students of Medicine and Human Biology and for master students of the UPF-Biomedicine Master Program. My PhD student Rosa defended her thesis in 2014 describing the process of Snail1 ubiquitination in the nucleus. I published my 2nd corresponding author paper at Nucleic Acids Research (IF 10,162) and in 2014, I obtained the accreditation of research as Associate Professor and became “Visiting/Associate Professor” at CEXS-UPF. I gained my first project as PI (MINECO, Retos-Plan Nacional) at 2014 to analyze the pathological role of Snail1 stabilization during EMT. I directed a second PhD student, Alex Frías which defended his thesis on 2015. I published my third corresponding author paper in Mol. Cell Biol. at 2016. Most of my research is summarized in two revisions as corresponding author at Cell Adhesion and Migration (2014) and in Semiars of. Cancer Biology, 2016 (IF: 9,955).
From 2015 I started a new project with the PhD student G. Lambies studying a new family of Snail1 deubiquitinating enzymes (DUBs) and the role of these enzymes in cancer progression. We identified a new DUB for Snail1, USP27X, with a relevant role in chemoresitance and metastasis formation (Lambies, G,..., Díaz VM; Cancer Research, 2019). In September 2020 I moved to Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) to establish my own group. Currently, I am working to find USP27X inhibitors to counteract Snail1 stabilization in cancer cells.
