Dr Chiang has been a RN in HK & Australia since 1988 and 1992 respectively. He worked clinically in various clinical areas in HK and Australia from 1988 - 2003, including ICU, medical & surgical nursing, ENT, oncology, ophthalmology, developmental disabilities and mental health nursing. He started teaching as a lecturer in nursing in the University of Newcastle (Australia) in 2001; subsequently a Teaching Consultant in the School of Nursing at the HKU (2005 - 2010), and an Assistant to Associate Professor at the PolyU in Hong Kong (2011 - 2021). His PhD project was a grounded theory study on the informal support of family members provided to critically ill patients in ICU. Surviving the critical illness through being present and interdependence between the critically ill patients and their significant family members was the basic social process discovered in this study. Stress and coping strategies were also major phenomena explored in this process. He has his research interest in studying family care in the life span in terms of psycho-social issues and mental health in the hospital and community settings, e.g. regarding post-natal depression, family needs of critically ill patients, occupation-related stress, caring of elderly in the family, and the family processes and recovery after major disasters. His other research interest and work are in nursing education. He led to set up the Simulation Teaching and Resources Centre in the School of Nursing HKU in 2009. As a co-researcher, he completed a GRF project in 2015 from which a simulator that aided to educate nursing students performing naso-gastric tube insertion. Dr Chiang has published in various refereed journals, e.g. Journal of Advanced Nursing; Critical Care; Intensive and Critical Care Nursing; Disaster Medicine & Public Health Preparedness; Collegian: The Australian Journal of Nursing Practice, Scholarship and Research; Computers in Biology and Medicine; and Nurse Education Today, etc. He is also a editorial board member and a member of the Board of Directors for the Journal of Problem Based Learning / JPBL (a journal published by the International Society of Problem Based Learning, Department of Nursing, Cheju Halla University, Jeju Island, South Korea, URL: https://www.ejpbl.org/).
