Bio
My basic research interest is focused on the pathogenesis and immune response induced by the parasite Fasciola hepatica in ruminants to develop effective vaccines to control fasciolosis. Nowadays, I am the principal investigator of two projects (VACUFAS and 1256503-R) funded by FEDER budget searching new vaccine prototypes against F. hepatica. Apart from these, I have been the PI of a European project (FLUKVAC) in 2014 focused on the development of successful vaccines against liver fluke by blocking the ability of helminth parasites to suppress the immune system in cattle. Moreover, I have participated as a researcher in four European projects (HELIVAC, PARAGONE, PARAVAC, ASFRIK) and four Spanish funded projects (ATTILA, COVID-19, INTER-FAS, P09-AGR-4671). Along my scientific career, I have published 41 peer-reviewed articles (D1:23, Q1:13, Q2:5) in relevant journals mainly in the Area of Veterinary Sciences, 12 in public veterinary specialised journals and 4 book chapters. My h-index is 12 with 488 total citations (SCOPUS). Additionally, I have supervised two Theses (2017; 2018), four Master projects (2017; 2020; 2021; 2021) and four End of degree projects (2019; 2021;2022) at University of Cordoba (UCO), and, currently, I am supervising two Theses, one Master project and four End Degree projects. My work has been presented in 100 international/national congresses participating as a congress organiser in four of them and as a member of the scientific board in other two. Apart from my scientific work, I teach (lectures and practical teaching) in the Veterinary Medicine degree at UCO (Subjects: Cytology and Histology, General Anatomical Pathology and Systemic Anatomical Pathology) accumulating more than 600 hours so far, being recently awarded as the Excellence Mention in Teaching within the Docentia-UCO program (2021).
I started my scientific career in September 2007 when I was granted with a FPI Grant (Ministry of Education and Science, Spain) to carry out my PhD at the Dept. of Veterinary Anatomical Pathology, UCO, focused on the study of the systemic and local cell-mediated immune response against Bovine Herpesvirus-1 in healthy calves and calves infected with Bovine Viral Diarrhea virus. In April 2013, I obtained the PhD degree (Apto Cum laude with International Mention) and in October 2013, I started a postdoctoral position at UCO participating in a European project (PARAVAC) investigating how to reduce the liver pathology caused by F. hepatica infections in domestic ruminants. In January 2014, I began a postdoctoral position at Queen's University Belfast (QUB), UK as an immunologist specialised in ruminant diseases, participating in an ERC Advanced Grant project (HELIVAC) held by Dr. John P. Dalton, one of the most recognised specialist in fasciolosis in the world, working in the development of a vaccine against liver fluke. In the meantime, I was awarded with a Marie-Curie Intra-European Fellowship, and from May 2014 to April 2016, I worked on my own project FLUKVAC at QUB. At the end of 2016, I returned to Spain with a postdoctoral competitive contract (Plan Propio UCO) for 2 years participating in a European project (PARAGONE). Between 2016 to 2020, I hold a Juan de la Cierva-Incorporation Grant (IJCI-2017-31366) for 2 years participating in the national project INTER-FAS to deep in the knowledge of the interaction parasite-host determining potential parasitic molecules to be used in a multiantigenic vaccine.
