Bio
V. Borges is integrated researcher at ISCTE-IUL. Graduated in Sociology in the FCSH at the New University of Lisbon in 1996 and completed a master’s degree in Culture, Communication and Information Technologies at ISCTE-IUL, in 1999. With her dissertation, in 2000, she won the António Sérgio Prize. Her first book was published in 2001, with support from the FCT and the Ministry of Culture.
In 2005, she completed a PhD degree in Sociology at the EHESS (Paris), under the supervision of P.-M. Menger and L. Batista (UNL). She was doing an internship as research fellow in the Centre of Sociology of Work and Arts at EHESS, Paris, with support from the Gulbenkian Foundation, when she was invited by the sociologist Villaverde Cabral to join his research team at the ICS-UL in 2005. This team carried out in-depth research on the architectural profession and changes in architecture over last two decades, commissioned by the Portuguese Order of Architects.
Thanks to the impact of this research in academia and in society in general, she has recently been invited to take charge of publications for the pioneering Bulletin of the arts, a quarterly and an annual report funded by the Secretary of State for Culture, in collaboration with DINAMIA’CET/ISCTE-IUL.
From April 2006 to February 2013, she completed her post-doctoral studies at the Institute of Social Sciences – University of Lisbon, with support from the FCT. During this time, she established 2 interdisciplinary research programmes in art and culture: (i) Artists and cultural workers: careers and labour markets; (ii) Professions and risk management: the case of actors and dancers.
She subsequently published 8 national and international books with the results of research on professions, organizations and labour markets, reputation and professional risk management.
In 2007, she published the book The Actor’s Profession (ICS) and another entitled Theatre Professions, between Pleasure and Risk (Roma Editora, 2008). She contributed to several publications (e.g., FATAL, the journal of academic theatre) and other similar initiatives with informational and scientific objectives, such as organizing research seminars at ICS, round table debates, and open seminars.
She taught several courses in the sociology of culture, professions and artistic studies. She has supervised three PhD theses, one of them now concluded, with the other two (one doctoral and the other post-doctoral) due to be completed in 2014-2016. Two of them are by Brazilian students.
She has published internationally on Artistic Professions, Actors and Labour Markets (Paris: Harmattan, 2009). From 2009-2011, she was on the board of the Sociology of the Professions Network, in the European Sociological Association, and she is presently co-director of the Art, Culture and Communication Network at the Portuguese Sociological Association. She is co-organizer of the Interim Meeting of the Sociology of Art Network for the European Sociological Association, 2016.
In 2010, she published the book Profession and Vocation, in which she analysed the recurring tension between vocation and profession in the arts, science and architecture. In 2011, she published international articles in specialized journals (e.g. Sociology of Art, Opus) and articles and 4 chapters in books in Portugal and Brazil.
Thanks to the impact of her publications in Paris, she was invited by Didier Demazière (Laboratory of the Professions, at CNRS) to be a guest speaker in the colloquium held in Paris in 2011 in honour of the well-known American sociologist Andrew Abbott. Abbott come to Lisbon in 2014, at the invitation of V. Borges and S. Aboim, research fellow at ICS-UL, as part of the Social Sciences Knowledge in the Making programme.
Since that time, she has published 12 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and has also written 12 book chapters, 7 of which at the international circulation. In 2012, she wrote the book Creativity and Institutions: New challenges for Artists and Culture Professionals (ICS-UL).
She worked with Portuguese and Brazilian colleagues in several specialist teams on the economics of art and culture, geography and social psychology, with whom she published empirical research. Meanwhile, she has organized an international colloquium each year. Several well-known international economists and sociologists of art and culture (e.g. Throsby, Behamou, Cowen, Karpik) took part in these colloquiums.
She is currently Associate Researcher at ICS-UL, sponsored by Karin Wall and M. Villaverde Cabral. She is supervising a young researcher for the project she was invited to join in the New Observatory of the Arts and Culture at ICS-IUL. She is post-doctoral scholarship at DINÂMIA’CET/ISCTE-IUL. A. Markusen, senior researcher at the University of Minnesota, is her international supervisor and one of the most important contacts V. Borges brings to her career development plan.
