个人简介
Verónica Botero-Fernández has been the dean of the Faculty of Mines at the National University of Colombia since 2018, where she oversees 12 undergraduate engineering curricula and 43 graduate programs with a population of approximately 7,000 students and 210 professors. She is an associate professor in the Department of Geosciences and Environment where she is a lecturer of subjects such as geographic information systems, remote sensing, and geospatial analysis at undergraduate and graduate levels. She is an active member of various research groups where she has been a co-investigator or principal investigator of more than 90 research or extension projects related to the use of geoinformation and remote sensing data for urban and rural planning, for risk management of disasters, and phytopathology. Currently, her research interests are focused on geoinformation for the modeling of natural and territorial phenomena, spatial data infrastructures, geo-services, and spectroscopy and data processing in phytopathology and different biological stresses in asymptomatic phases.
As dean of the school of engineering, she has proposed programs and projects focused on 3 axes: efficient management based on data, inclusion, diversity, and sustainability, and faculty that learns and relates with the community. Being the first woman to hold the title after 131 years of history of the faculty and her personal history have led her to work decisively in the implementation of gender equality programs in the faculty, promote the access of more women to STEM areas, and implement actions to prevent gender violence. This work has led her to participate in projects such as the Center for Thought in Strengthening the leadership and empowerment of Colombian women in STEM, in the call of the NMT DAAD to reduce the gender gap in HEIs in Colombia and talks and discussions for the EXPLORA park, Mujeres TIC, Youth Social Impact Leaders, Innovar + EPM, among others.
She has more than 75 papers and conference proceedings and has supervised more than 30 masters and doctoral students in the past two decades. In 1994 she obtained her diploma as a Civil Engineer from the EAFIT University in Medellín, Colombia, in 1997 she obtained her M.Sc. degree in Geological Survey from the International Institute for Geo-information Science and Earth Observation, in Enschede, the Netherlands, and in 2009 she obtained her doctoral degree from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, with a dissertation entitled: “Geo-information for measuring vulnerability to earthquakes: a fitness for use approach”. Before joining the academy, she worked as a geotechnical and analysis engineer at Integral S.A., an engineering consulting company in Colombia where she participated in national and international projects in Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. She has been director of several undergraduate and postgraduate programs, director of the Department of Geosciences and Environment, vice-dean of research and extension of the faculty, director of research, and extension of the Medellín campus (5 faculties), and interim vice-rector of the Medellín campus on several occasions.
