Our translational research program examines the interactions between bacteria and host inflammatory and developmental pathways that determine disease susceptibility in premature infants. We use genetic models, cell culture systems and human genetics to understand pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis in premature infants. The three areas of focus are: 1) Mechanisms of lung vascular development and disrupted alveolarization and vascularization with sepsis and hyperoxia. 2) Genetic basis of neonatal disease phenotypes. 3) Dysregulation of host immune system-bacteria crosstalk in necrotizing enterocolitis. Our team consists of clinical trainees/faculty, pHD scientists and post-doctoral fellows and masters level scientists.
