Career Trajectory
Bio
My academic training and research experience have provided me with a background in microbiology focusing on fungal cell biology, host-pathogen interactions, and identification of new targets for drug design. As an undergraduate student, I conducted research with several pathogenic fungi and contributed to different clinical report cases. I obtained my Ph.D. at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), where I got the opportunity to work with Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic yeast that causes fungal meningoencephalitis. Throughout my dissertation, I acquired extensive knowledge in fungal cell biology, extracellular vesicles, polysaccharide secretion, host-pathogen interactions, and the identification of new targets for drug design. These backgrounds provided me with an opportunity to join the laboratory of Dr. Robin May in Birmingham, UK, as a visiting Ph.D. student, where I further my studies on C. neoformans escape mechanisms from host cells, especially vomocytosis. During my Ph.D., I published a first-author paper that studied the effect of an ergosterol inhibitor on secretion mechanisms in the human pathogenic yeasts C. neoformans and C. gattii. Also, I have published a first-author review paper about fungal extracellular vesicles and co-authored two other publications demonstrating the importance of flippases for fungal pathogenicity. Further in my scientific career, I joined Dr. Fries' lab at Stony Brook as a postdoctoral researcher. During this time, I have studied the role of cell wall dynamics in replicative aged yeast cells. This work resulted in a first-author publication. In addition, I wrote a chapter about replicative aging techniques and co-authored a study describing the enhancement in antifungal tolerance of C. neoformans during low glucose starvation. Currently, I am working at Dr. Del Poeta's lab on the discovery of new antifungal targets, with an emphasis on performing animal research.
