Bio
Vanessa Mendonça graduated in Biology in 2010 at Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and completed a masters in Marine Ecology at the University of Lisbon in 2010. In 2020 she was awarded a PhD, with Distinction and Honors, in Marine Biology, by the University of Lisbon. Her thesis was awarded 2nd place for Best PhD in Ecology Award 2020 – SPECO (Portuguese Society of Ecology) and Amadeu Dias Foundation.
She is a researcher at MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre. She participated in multiple long-term scientific expeditions in Portugal and in Brazil. She is experienced in biodiversity surveys, taxonomy of coastal organisms, thermal and ecotoxicological experimental essays and food web networks analysis.
She has published 33 scientific articles, with 400 citations, and her H-factor is 11. She having collaborated with over 76 co-authors and many national and international institutions dedicated to marine science (eg FCT-UNL, PT; Santa Fe Institute, USA; iDiv, Germany; Université du Quebec, Canada; Plymouth Marine Laboratory; CEBIMar-University of São Paulo, Brazil). She published 5 papers as first author and 3 as last author (coordinator). She published in high-impact general and specialized journals: Nature Climate Change, Nature Ecology and Evolution, Sci Total Environ, Ecol Indic, PlosOne, Mar Ecol Prog Ser, and Estuar Coast Shelf Sci. All journals are quartile 1 in their respective areas. I have 11 oral communications in national and international meetings and 9 posters.
She have been involved in 7 projects: BioPlume (PTDC/AAG-REC/2139/2012), WarmingWebs (PTDC/MAR-EST/2141/2012), CoralSol - response of the invasive sun coral to climate change and extreme thermal events (CNPq-Brazil), LifeLines (PTDC/BIA-BMA/28304/2017), SardiTemp (LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-032209), ExtremeOceans (PTDC/BIA-BMA/1494/2020), and FutureMARES (EU-H2020), allowing me the development of a national and international network of collaborators. She co-supervised: 6 under graduated students, 2 Erasmus student, and 4 MSc students, and assisted the practical classes of the subjects of Marine Ecology and Marine Biodiversity of the Masters in Marine Ecology at FCUL.
Currently, She have a contract, in the project LifeLines, at MARE-Lisbon, working on an analysis of Portuguese estuarine and coastal food webs, using stable isotopes and complex food web network models.
