个人简介
Dr. Albaugh is originally from a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA), and attended Coastal Carolina University (Conway, South Carolina) on an academic scholarship, earning his undergraduate degree magna cum laude in biology and chemistry. As part of the Medical Scientist Training Program at Penn State College of Medicine (Hershey, Pennsylvania), he completed his doctoral dissertation in physiology entitled, "Mechanisms of the Metabolic Side Effects of Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs", under the direction of Christopher J. Lynch, PhD, in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology. After finishing his undergraduate medical training at Penn State he completed his general surgery residency training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tennessee). While at Vanderbilt, he also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship that was supported by an individual NRSA postdoctoral fellow award from the National Institutes of Health, working primarily in the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Research Laboratories directed by Naji N. Abumrad, MD. His project, "Mechanisms of Bile Acid Signaling and Metabolism following Gastric Bypass" (F32DK103474), examined the effects of bile acids and their metabolism following bariatric surgery and how bile acids can be used as novel therapeutics for diabetes and obesity. Following his residency and postdoctoral research training, he completed additional subspecialty clinical training in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery in the Bariatric & Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland, OH). Currently, Dr. Albaugh is faculty at Louisiana State University as an Assistant Professor of Metabolic Surgery at Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Dr. Albaugh's research has been supported by a variety of societies and funding agencies, including the American Medical Association, National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Dr. Albaugh's major research interests are the investigation of the mechanisms of the metabolic effects of metabolic/bariatric surgery, bile acid metabolism, preoperative identification of responders/non-responders to metabolic/bariatric surgery, and mechanisms of weight regain after bariatric surgery. His other research interests include surgical innovation, clinical and translational research, surgical clinical trials, biostatistical analysis and reproducible research.
