Bio
Valoree S. Gagnon is a postdoctoral research fellow at Michigan Technological University, in Houghton, Michigan. Her research focus is environmental policy and toxic risk; multi-scalar governance; human health; and environmental and social justice for Great Lakes tribal nations such as the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians. She uses institutional ethnography within various Great Lakes agencies to explore (1) adaptive governance of toxic contaminants’ policy at multiple scales; (2) the differing ways “health” is defined in environmental and human health protection policy; and (3) the socio-cultural, physical, and spiritual impacts for subsistence harvesting tribes due to toxic fish. Her work is a part of an NSF research project, a multi-university, inter-disciplinary, and community-based project investigating local to global toxic contamination, governance, and the dynamics of coupled human-natural systems.
