Career Trajectory
Bio
Venkata Sai Kiran Chakravadhanula studied bachelors in Metallurgy and Materials Technology at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, India (2003) and Masters in Materials Science and Engineering at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel, Germany (2005). He received his Ph.D. in 2011 working for Prof. Franz Faupel at the group of multicomponent materials, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel on “Vapor phase deposition of functional nanocomposites and their modification by ion beam irradiation”. During this, he was involved in the synthesis and characterization of functional nanocomposite coatings by vacuum-based gas-phase deposition simultaneously from multiple sources (sputtering and evaporation). In 2008, German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD award for the outstanding international student was awarded. During 2009-2011 he joined the group of Prof. Lorenz Kienle working on transmission electron microscopic studies of the Al-rich ternary Ti-Al alloys where he contributed significantly to the establishment of electron tomography methods and initiated collaborations for the then newly established TEM center. Since July 2011 he was working at the Electron Microscopy & Spectroscopy group at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (HIU) for electrochemical energy storage, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in the field of in situ and ex situ Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy studies of electrochemical materials under Dr. Christian Kübel and Prof. Dr. Horst Hahn. During this time, he was also associated with the Karlsruhe Nano Micro Factory (KNMF) and was actively involved in establishment of collaborative projects. He is also a principle investigator of the German Science Foundation – Research Unit FOR2093. Additionally, coining for the first time in the world a course on “In situ Electron Microscopy and Spectroscopy” in the year 2015, he is associated with the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany towards pursuing his Habilitation. His research interests include additive manufacturing, analysis of battery materials, Pharmaceutical drugs, “Ayurvedic Bhasmas”, the development of new methods for electron microscopy such as in situ (S)TEM methods and correlative electron microscopy for applications in translational materials science. After a short stay at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy & New Materials (ARCI) as a Project Scientist, he worked as a scientist/engineer at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Further, he joined Skyroot Aerospace Private Limited as Lead, R&D and Strategy. Besides being elected as fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences in 2017, he was also elected as a member of the first convent of the scientists at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology 2015-2017.
