I am a chemical engineer that engaged into a research career in chemistry.
Early steps in research were given in 1999, the first year of the Chemical Engineering degree, when I joined the project "On the rocks" and started studying the influence of different rocks in the growth and crystal habit of inorganic crystals.
In 2006, this interest in crystals led me into an area that was then emerging: the design of new crystal forms of active pharmaceutical ingredients using crystal engineering principles, a rich and challenging area that was explored in both my Ms.C. (pre-Bologna) and Ph.D. projects. At this time, I joined Centro de Química Estrutural to develop my research.
Furthermore I have been dedicated to metallodrugs and metallopharmaceuticals, where mechanochemistry reveals to be a very powerful synthetic technique.
In 2012, my main focus turned to developing BioMOFs, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for pharmacological applications, such as controlled drug delivery. More recently, main interest is towards novel BioMOFs built with antibiotics as linkers to enhance the antimicrobial activity and help in the fight against multiresistant microorganisms and my future goal is to extend this type of activity to Ionic cocrystals (ICCs).
The determination of stability, solubility and dissolution rates (via HPLC studies) of the novel pharmaceutical crystal forms as well as the establishment of structure-properties relationships are an important part of my work.
Over the years, I acquired expertise in Crystallography by extensively using single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques in the screening and characterization of new crystal forms. I have been given the opportunity to collect data at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, Grenoble), one of the most powerful synchrotron radiation source in Europe.
I also have knowledge on differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), hot-stage microscopy (HSM), infrared spectroscopy, and HPLC.
I am currently the Principal Investigator of a project entitled “ACFs: Antibiotic coordination frameworks as a way to enhance the bioactivity of the drugs” (LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-030988 - PTDC/QUI-OUT/30988/2017).
