Bio
Dr. V.K Karastathis is a Research Director in the Institute of Geodynamics, National Observatory of Athens (NOA). Sine 2020, he is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Geodynamics. He studied Physics at the University of Athens and holds an M.Sc. and a Ph.D degree in “Applied Geophysics” (University of Birmingham and University of Athens).
His research interest and expertise are focused on Applied Geophysics and Seismology. More specifically, his current research interests are mainly focused on local earthquake tomography with microseismicity monitoring, the development of earthquake early warning systems, precursor earthquake phenomena by the study of geophysical parameters such as soil radon variation, seismic reflection and refraction surveys, borehole seismic surveys as well as engineering geophysics by investigating the dynamic parameters of the foundation soil. He has worked extensively in the study of active tectonic structures with application of geophysical methodologies, in the fields of archaeological prospecting, energy resources, geothermal fields, foundation of large constructions, dams, skyscrapers etc. He is also currently involved in research and algorithm construction for surveillance of vessels by the use of distributed acoustic sensing and passive acoustic methods (boat detection, tracking and classification).
In 2002, he was awarded with the Academy of Athens 1st prize for his publication “2-D Velocity structure of the buried ancient canal of Xerxes: an application of seismic methods in archaeology" in Journal of Applied Geophysics.
During 2016-2022 he was Associate Editor in the international journal Journal of Applied Geophysics, Elsevier. He is also an Advisory Editor in the journal "Research in Geophysics".
He has co-ordinated international scientific workshops in Europe and America such as "Seismic and GPR methods for urban and microzonation studies", European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers. Near Surface. 2014 and FORUM as part of SAGEEP 2015, Austin, Texas USA March 22-26, 2015. Environmental and Engineering Geophysical Society on "MASW in an Urban Environment - Soil Characterization and Microzonation Studies". He has also participated for invited talks at IUGG, AGU and jPGU conferences.
He is the author of 48 publications in International Journals and other 53 in Conference Proceedings (full text and short papers >5pages). With conference abstracts included the total number of the publications exceeds the number of 170.
It has been invited and gave a significant number of popularized scientific talks in recent years (> 20). His research beyond a significant number of citations has received widespread international acclaim (New York Times, Times, International Herald Tribune, Die Zeit, World Archeology Tribute, etc.).
Currently is the Principal Investigator for the Institute of Geodynamics of the Fibersence (EU project) and other 4 projects. In total he has coordinated more than 40 research projects while participating in many others.
