Career Trajectory
Bio
I am a “Ramón y Cajal” postdoctoral researcher recently hired at the UPV. During my research career I have published a total of 56 peer-reviewed papers (>1000 cites) in 17 ISI Journals (70% on the Q1 rank & 30% in D1 rank). The peer-reviewed papers had significant acceptance in the scientific community and the quality scientific indicators show high-values: h-index=20. These manuscripts have contributed to the generation of knowledge thanks to i) the development of maturation protocols for key aquaculture species with reproductive bottlenecks, ii) the standardization of techniques for assessing the fish gamete quality, and iii) the generation of cryoprotocols for several endangered aquatic species (ranging from tiny fish to big sharks). Thanks to the 5-years training period abroad between pre- and post-doctoral stays (Japan, UK, Portugal, and Brazil), the list of co-authors amounts to 91 scientists of 54 institutions belonging to 17 different countries, which denotes a wide mobility and internationalization of my research career.
Regarding projects, I have been involved in 17 R+D projects at institutional, regional, state, and European level, with an accumulated budget of 1.8 million euros. During the last years I am developing new research lines and leading projects focused on the study of the biology & conservation of threatened freshwater and marine fish through a biotechnology and cryobiology approach. In that sense, I have obtained funding for leading 6 R+D projects as a principal researcher, managing funds with over 405.415 €. It is important to highlight the achievement of a Marie Curie-IF contract (2021-23; H2020 programme) for developing the project CRYO-FISH; and more recently I am awarded with the Ramón y Cajal aid (5-year contract; 2023-27) by the State Program to Develop, Attract & Retain Talent. Thanks to the achievements over the research field, he has been recognized for 2 six-year research excellence periods and the I3 certification by the AEI (State Investigation Agency).
Over my research career he has also been collaborating with several public and private institutions achieving important knowledge & technology transfers such as i) the development of a hormonal-maturation protocol for controlling the reproduction in captivity of European eel and the ii) the development, improvement and standardization of tools for fish gamete quality analysis. I have also organized some R+D activities for scientific audience (congress, workshops, etc.) and I also have leaded some outreach activities trying to link animal science with citizens, highlighting 4 seminars, 4 outreach days focused on biodiversity preservation (i.e. World Fish Migration Day), and 2 practical courses for discovering the urban biodiversity (i.e. Biodiversidad Urbana at UPV).
During the last years I have leaded some supervision & mentoring tasks, highlighting the co-direction of the Ph.D. Thesis “Improvement of techniques for sperm evaluation and cryobanking in European eel” rated as Exc. Cum laude. Nowadays I am codirecting 2 more PhDs which are in a running process. Regarding edition tasks, from 2016 to date, I work as Editor on the area Genetic & Fish Reproduction in the journal Revista AquaTIC; and from 2021 I am an Editorial Board Member on Animals, editing the special Issue entitled "Gamete, Embryo and Larvae Handling in Aquatic Animals".
