Cell division is a critical biological event that is tightly regulated. The molecular understanding of the underlying mechanisms of cell division regulation constitutes an important problem in the Life Sciences. In the human, defects in the process result in genome instability, birth and developmental defects, spontaneous miscarriage, cancer, and premature ageing. In essence, I am trying to understand how different signals in the cell work together to ensure accurate cell division and to develop innovative therapeutics, ranging from small size compounds to peptides and RNAi to nanomaterials for tumour cells sensitisation and drug delivery, to tackle diseases associated with defects in cell division. To this aim my group integrates protein biochemistry, physical chemistry and structure-guided drug development methods with medicinal chemistry, computational and cellular biology and preclinical validation approaches.
As a PI, Co-investigator, Named Investigator or Collaborator, I have been involved in rising over £15M from the UK Research Councils (MRC, BBSRC), charities (The Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK), learned societies (The Royal Society) and international research funding agencies and organisations in Europe, North and South America (CNRS, France; Fondazione Cariplo, Italy; Spanish Council of Scientific Research (CSIC); Instituts de Recherche en Santé, Canada; CONACyT, Mexico; FONDECYT, Chile).
I am often invited to speak and to present research advances by my group at international conferences and to peer review Research Programmes, Project Grants and Career Development scholarships by the Research Councils of the United Kingdom (e.g., the Medical Research Council, MRC; the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, BBSRC; and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, EPRSC); Breast Cancer NOW; and International funding agencies across Europe, North and South America and Asia.
