He is interested in effective learning environments that bolster both achievement and self-regulation of students. His use-inspired basic research program is based on interdisciplinary collaborations and the usage of robust and innovative research designs, including randomized controlled field trials, artificial intelligence in education approaches, and personal learning agents. In particular, his research focuses on motivation and self-regulation, digital media, teaching quality, and giftedness.
Trautwein is one of the world's most productive researchers in his field. According to an analysis by Fong et al. (2022; Educational Psychology Review), he was the second most productive educational researcher worldwide in the period from 2015 to 2021 by number of publications in the most prestigious educational psychology journals, after ranking fourth on this criterion in the period from 2009 to 2014 (cf. Greenbaum et al., 2016) and third in the period from 2003 to 2008 (cf. Jones et al., 2010). For his scientific work, Trautwein has been awarded the Otto Hahn Medal of the Max Planck Society, the CORECHED Prize for Empirical Educational Research, and the Young Researcher Award of the Division of Educational Psychology of the German Psychological Association, among others. The Leibniz Institute for Educational Progress (LIfBi) has awarded him honorary status as a Research Affiliate.
