Background
I am a Ph.D. candidate in Politics, specializing in European Union Politics, and European Integration at the School of Government and Public Policy. I joined the Ph.D. program in March 2017. I have two B.A. degrees. I received my first B.A. degree in Criminal Justice and Police Sciences from Turkey’s National Police Academy, and a second B.A. degree in Economics from Ankara’s Gazi University. I earned my M.A. degree in Economics from the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York in 2007 with having been named to the Graduate Dean’s List. I also took courses in Mathematics (Calculus) in the Hunter College of the City University of New York in 2005. I was awarded state scholarship for the European Union Specialization Program in Ankara University European Union Research Centre. My main research interests are in the areas of International Political Economy, Foreign Policy, International Relations and Global Politics, European Politics, International Conflict Resolution, and Network Analysis.
Ph.D. Project
Not a single day seems to pass without newspapers reporting and political actors talking about Turkey's EU candidacy and its perceived eligibility. This phenomenon has political, economic and security implications not only for the EU and Turkey but also for the broader geography. Therefore, it is a highly political and relevant issue in terms of European integration and international political and economic order. With this perspective in mind, my research mainly focuses on the Turkish case and contrasts it against other cases. My research question is: What explains the support for (or, opposition to) Turkey’s EU membership bid within and across EU member states over time? Let alone statistical analysis is not enough to explain the context. A complete picture of the phenomenon could be provided with the investigation of dynamics behind the masses and elites’ stances on Turkey’s bid, and linkages between the two. To this end, there are two dimensions in what I am looking at, namely mass level and elite level, which I will examine through mass opinion surveys, and semi-structured interviews with the relevant experts, business people and diplomats who are influential in the European Union circles.
