Dr. Shoichiro Tsugane is an epidemiologist and the director of National Institute of Health and Nutrition, National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition. He published over 900 peer-reviewed original scientific papers mainly in the field of epidemiology of and prevention for non-communicable diseases such as cancer.
He is the principal investigator of an on-going large-scale prospective follow-up study (the JPHC Study since 1990, approximately 130,000 population) and has extensively been publishing evidences on diet-disease associations. He has also initiated another prospective study in 2011 as the principal investigator (the JPHC-NEXT, approximately 115,000 population). He has also established the Japan Cohort Consortium of over 500,000 participants from 10 cohort studies in Japan and has been publishing the firm evidences for cancer etiology and prevention. This activity led to the development of an evidence-based cancer prevention guidelines for the Japanese, which are now widely used and updated if necessary. He has also been conducting several epidemiological studies on Japanese immigrants and their descendants mainly in S?o Paulo, Brazil and also in Hawaii, USA. His research focuses on the investigation of how dietary, lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors are related to occurrence of non-communicable diseases and maintenance/promotion of healthy life.
