个人简介
I have been a researcher for the past 7 years interested in the metabolic characterization of African Americans with family history of type 2 diabetes and the ethnic differences in Insulin Sensitivity (SI) and glucose-dependent glucose disposal (SG). I am also interested in studying the metabolic correlates and nontraditional metabolic risk factors that lead to the development of type 2 diabetes and CVD in African-American women. Specifically, I am interested in studying the effect of aerobic exercise and diet-induced weight loss on HDL functionality measured by paraoxonase enzyme activity (PON1). Recently, I have demonstrated that African American women have comparable serum HDL cholesterol levels as White women, but the functionality of the PON1 was 50% lower. I believe understanding the role of HDL functionality on the vasculature (structure and function) could provide (1) new insights into the mechanisms of the athero-cardioprotective effects of exercise and diet-induced weight loss in African American women compared to white American women, and (2) the potential to develop novel and therapeutic armamentarium to improve HDL as a nontraditional approach to preventing CVD.
Finally, it is well known that there are health disparities of prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and cognitive impairment among African American elderly community. I am interested in designing and implementing culturally specific community physical activities to improve cognitive function among seniors . My current is a comparative effectiveness study on the effects of aerobic exercise on cognitive function in African Americans and Whites with mild cognitive impairment compared to sedentary lifestyle. Participants in the program will be enrolled into the Silver Sneakers Program for 6 months, followed by 6 months sustainability. We will measure changes in cognitive function and cardiometabolic risk factors for dementia and prediabetes. We are hopeful that the findings of the current proposal will have enormous public health implications in preventing or delaying onset of dementia and type 2 diabetes in the US elderly population.
