I am a sedimentologist/ecologist with over 20 years' experience in multidisciplinary field based coastal research, and more recently in delivering social/economic impact from environmental science. I use habitats such as mangrove forests and mudflats as model systems for investigating and solving vital sedimentological and ecological problems, including sediment dynamics and ecological structure/functioning of coastal environments and how these respond to extreme events such as storm surges. This work is facilitated by interdisciplinary collaborations, drawing on diverse disciplines including remote sensing and modelling. My impact work is using scenarios and novel card sorting exercises in workshops to investigate with key users future opportunities for sustainable growth in light of future environmental change.
My research is focused on three main themes: 1) Understanding the complex physical, biological and chemical interactions that determine how natural environments function and deliver ecosystem services, using coastal habitats such as mudflats, marshes and mangrove forests as model systems; 2) The development and application of novel methodologies and technologies to facilitate this work, particularly devices for investigating sediment erosion; and 3) Developing methods, toolkits and collaborative networks for sharing and growing capacity in user relevant marine and coastal research, to ensure researchers deliver optimum impact and application from their work; maximising the social, economic and environmental potential of our coasts and seas. This includes facilitating partnerships between government, users and universities, e.g. to inform policy and co-deliver innovative coastal management.
