Eric Tournié is a professor of electrical engineering and photonics at University of Montpellier (F) and a senior-member of Institut Universitaire de France (IUF, 2012 - 2017 and 2023 - 2028). He is a specialist of semiconductor heterostructures for optoelectronics applications. For the last decade his research activity has been centered around the demonstration of new optoelectronic devices operating in the mid-infrared, with a particular focus on the epitaxial integration of III-V devices on Si platforms. He is author/co-author of ~ 250 papers and ~100 communications at international conferences.
Eric obtained his PhD in 1990 from the University of Montpellier (France). From 1990 to 1993 he was a staff member of the Max-Planck-Institute in Stuttgart (Germany). In 1993 he joined Paul-Drude-Institute in Berlin (Germany) before moving to CRHEA/CNRS, Valbonne (France), to work on ZnSe-based heterostructures. In 1999 he initiated a program on GaInNAs heterostructures and devices. In 2002 he was recruited as a Professor by the University of Montpellier (F). From 2005 to 2019 he was head of the "mid-infrared devices" group in the EE department (IES, UMR CNRS 5214). From Oct. 1st, 2019, to April 30th, 2020, he was a JSPS Visiting Research Fellow in Prof. Arakawa's group at the Institute for Nano Quantum Information Electronics, The University of Tokyo, Japan.
Eric is a member of the Advisory Board and/or Program Committee of several international conference series (Int. Conf. on Molecular Beam Epitaxy, European Conf. on Molecular-Beam Epitaxy, Mid-Infrared Optical Materials and Devices, Int. Symp. on Compound Semiconductors). He served as co-chair of the Quantum Sensing and Nanophotonics conference of SPIE Photonics West from 2012 to 2015, as general chair of the Mid-IR Optical Materials and Devices (MIOMD) conference in 2014, as general chair of the Int. Symposium on Compound Semiconductors (ISCS) in 2014 and as general chair of the Int. Conf. on Molecular-Beam Epitaxy in 2016. He was a member of the Editorial Board of J of Physics D: Applied Physics between 2010 and 2016 and an Associate Editor for Electronics Letters between 2016 and 2022. Eric is a senior member of IEEE since 2014 and has received the Al Cho MBE Award in 2022.
