Dr. Tomislav Bašić holds B.Sc. degree in Surveying Engineering, earned at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Geodesy, Croatia and Ph.D. in Geodetic Science, earned at the Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany. His core area of teaching and researching for over 40 years is physical geodesy, in particular gravimetry and the determination of Earth's gravity field parameters as well as state survey, especially the application of GNSS technology for the establishment of basic positional geodetic networks and geodynamic studies.
Basic knowledge in these areas he has gained during his specialization at the Institute for Earth Surveying (Institut für Erdmessung) in Hannover, which resulted in the defense of doctoral dissertation in 1989 under the mentorship of world-known expert Professor Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Torge, entitled "Research for the Purpose of Regional Geoid Determination with Decimeter Accuracy" (in German), as well as during post-doctorate specialization with Professor dr. Richard H. Rapp in the Department of Geodetic Science and Surveying, Ohio State University, Columbus, USA, working on research project for NASA, which resulted in the monograph "Oceanwide Prediction of Gravity Anomalies and Sea Surface Heights Using Geos-3, Seasat and Geosat Altimeter Data and Etopo5u Bathymetric Data".
Prof. Bašić was the holder of a significant number of projects, studies and expert opinions for state and public enterprises and private companies in Croatia, but also in Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. As author or coauthor he published more then 250 different articles, most of them in reputable journals and proceedings of international conferences. He gave more than 50 invited and other public talks at several local and international conferences, including IAG EUREF, IAG Gravity and Geoid and IUGG Symposia.
Dr. Bašić has proposed a new positional and gravimetric reference system (including change of datum) of the Republic of Croatia, which are legalized in 2004. He is the author of the official GRID-transformation model (T7D) to connect the old and the newly created spatial data, as well as of the latest Croatian geoid model (HRG2009), which is due to exceptional accuracy widely used since 2011 for the "GNSS/geoid" definition of heights in a large number of geodetic works in Croatia. Under his leadership, were carried out from 1994 to the present geodynamic research in Croatia, especially in the area of the Adriatic microplate, and the results that have been achieved by treating repeated GPS (GNSS) measurements through international co-operation have been published in reputable international and national journals.
