Career Trajectory
Bio
In 2017, Tomas Hron is going to finish PhD study in the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Prague, the Czech Republic. He received his master degree from the Charles University in Prague. During the master study he worked in the Lab. of Virology dealing with Polyomaviruses. Then he spent a half of a year as an intern in the Max F. Perutz Laboratories of Vienna studying molecular aspects of a neuron cell motility. In the current lab he studies genetics and virology of vertebrate retroviruses implementing the bioinformatic approaches. Some of his most interesting findings are eg. discovery of the primitive endogenous lentivirus in the genome of Malayan colugo uncovering an ancient evolutionary history of lentiviruses, or identification of the GC-rich category of genes previously thought to be missing in birds. Currently, he tries to analyze phylogenetic relationships among endogenous lentiviruses and gammaretroviruses, including quantification of selection pressure imposed by these ancient infections on antiviral restriction genes.
