Career Trajectory
Bio
I am Dr. Tolulope Ayodeji Olatoye, a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Fort Hare, South Africa. My official duties include the following: Enabling outstanding doctoral graduates and students to obtain experience of research and innovation; Supervision, teaching and mentoring of doctoral, masters and honours thesis and dissertations; Production of articles in international journals, books and publication outputs; Developing knowledge for stakeholders such as the government, business, industry and social communities; Promoting national and international conference attendance and the presentation of research papers at these conferences, as well as placing the University of Fort Hare at the forefront of research and innovation. My research experience is focused on Environmental Geography; Coastal Resources Management, Ecological Science; Sustainable Forest Management; ethnographic research and Urban Studies. Hence, I am confident that my teaching, research and community engagement experience makes me an ideal candidate for your open position. Further, I possess Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the Department of Geography and Environmental Science, University of Fort Hare, Alice Campus, South Africa in 2021. In addition, I have two Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in 2004 and Environmental Geography (2014) respectively from Nigeria’s premier university, i.e. the University of Ibadan, as well as Bachelor of Science (HONS) degree from the same institution. Additionally, I have diploma certification in Business Administration from Hellenic Open University, Greece.
Not only do I have adequate teaching experience, my research interests also fit perfectly with your description of the ideal candidate. My doctoral study investigated the effects of urban expansion, coastal vegetation ecosystems conservation and functioning in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa. The study offers crucial information about South African coastal urban vegetation condition, threats to conservation and the general vegetation ecosystem functioning needed in advancing targeted conservation and biodiversity restoration in these fragile coastal ecosystem to ensure a sustainable ecosystem functioning and human wellbeing. My doctoral study adopted a trio-mixed methodological approach incorporating qualitative, quantitative and geospatial techniques in analysing urbanization impacts on coastal vegetation ecosystem using the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) as a case study underpinned by the Urban Green Sustainability theory. Consequently, the study revealed that urbanization has had multiple effects on the vegetation ecosystem dynamics, for instance, plant species change, degradation, vegetation stress, spatial-temporal areal coverage reduction for the 1998 and 2018 period due built-up increase, and therefore, affecting community’s derived functions and benefits thereof, among others. The study also generated and analysed 12 research hypothesis (with high significance levels) centred on literacy in conservation education, ecosystems functioning and challenges of urban expansion. These results were validated through a multi-model assessment (NDVI, NDBI, Kappa coefficient, Pearson’s product moment correlation and hypotheses testing). In addition, this study also proffers solutions (such as reforestation, environmental monitoring and education of BCMM inhabitants) towards the actualization of environmentally sustainable CVEs. The thesis has produced research articles in DHET-accredited journals, which have been published, accepted and in advanced stages of publication respectively.
As an academic, I have served as Junior Lecturer at the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, University of Fort Hare, Alice Campus, South Africa from 2017-2021. I was also appointed Lecturer-in-Geography at the Federal Bureau of Statistics, Ibadan, Nigeria (2001 to 2002), where I lectured undergraduate and diploma students in physical/human geography, as well as quantitative techniques in geography. Furthermore, I was also appointed as Research Scientist, Forestry research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Jericho, Ibadan, Nigeria (since June, 2007 to date) where I carry out research on forestry, climate change and environmental management and modelling. Some of my major achievements at FRIN include the following:
Establishment of a well-equipped GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory at the Institute; Recommendation to the Director-General and staffing of the GIS/RS section with skilled personnel; Capacity development of sectional staff members for optimum performance through recommenda
