个人简介
Veterinarian and research scientist with expertice in routine necropsy and diagnostic histopathology of production animals since 1991. In 2001 I became head of the histopathology laboratory at the institute. The tasks included responsibility for the TSE confirmatory testing (histopathology and immunohistochemistry) in Denmark (ending 2019). From 2013 I have furthermore been in charge of pet, fur and zoo animal as well as wildlife necropsy and histopathology. Besides pathologic anatomy and diagnostic histopathology mainly related to infectious diseases caused by bacteria, parasites and virus as well as various kind of toxicosis my diagnostic portfolio includes in situ identification of some viruses and a long range of bacteria among other Fransciella tularensis, Coxiella burnetii (both notifiable pathogens), Mycoplasma spp., and Brachyspira spp. With the exception of Lawsonia intracellularis (IFAT using our own monoclonal antibody) the bacteria are identified by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). For more than 15 years FISH has been the cornerstone for development and implementation of new in situ methods.
In addition, my diagnostic responsibilities include case reporting as well as professional supervision and advice to veterinarians and relevant authorities. Participating and diploma in the course “Kompetenceudvikling I forskningsbaseret rådgivning”, RDTU 2017. Supervision of authorities (public advice) included being a part of the Danish contingency plan at the institute and e.g. head of National Reference Laboratory for TSE and the authorship of the annual report to the EU Commission “Laboratory Examinations of Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies in Denmark” until Spring 2019.
In brief, my research has focused on:
Design and application of specific in situ detection methods for identification of bacterial pathogens in experimentally as well as in naturally infected animals, ongoing activity.
Diseases in pigs with special reference to intestinal infections caused by Lawsonia intracellularis and spirochaetes of the genus Brachyspira in experimentally as well as in naturally infected animals.
Studying the pathogenesis of the skin disease bovine digital dermatitis with special emphasis on identification of Treponema spp., and other possibly causal bacteria.
Recent research activities have focused on identification of bacteria in reproduction disorders in dairy cows and sows. For a more detailed summery of my research activities see List of publications.
Ongoing research activities include wild-life pathology especially in marine mammals, cervidae and racoon dogs.
Teaching has been an important factor throughout my professional career mainly focusing on animal diseases and veterinary pathology for graduate students and as post-graduation for veterinarians. Since 2010 I have been responsible for the bachelor course “Human Fysiologi” (Human Physiology)(24001): 5 ECTS points, at DTU (70-100 students per year). Furthermore, I have been giving single lectures in the course “Introduction to experimental biomedicine” (24005), and in “Swine diseases and laboratory diagnostics” for veterinary students from KU-SUND.
Currently, I am official co-supervisor for a PhD student from NMBU, Norway (Bovine Digital Dermatitis). Main supervision of PhD students completed: “Pathogenesis of Lawsonia intracellularis infection”, Torsten Boutrup (2009). “Porcine Neonatal Diarrhoea”, Beata Jonach (2015). Co-supervision: “Treponema spp. in porcine skin ulcers”, Frida Karlsson (2014), SLU, Sweden. “Molecular characterisation of the uterine microbiome of dairy cows suffering from endometritis, metritis, and pyometra”, Lif R. V. Knudsen (2014), DTU. “Presence and location of bacteria in the bovine uterus during the postpartum period, during pregnancy, and in pyometra”, Cecilia Christensen Karstrup (2017), KU-SUND, Denmark. "Epidemiologic survey of hoof lesions and establishment of control program in Prata City and identification of pathogens associated with bovine digital dermatitis", Tiago F. Moreira, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, 2017.
Furthermore, throughout my professional career, I have had the honor to be invited as speaker at various in-service courses, national as well as international conferences, seminars and symposiums. The focus has mainly been on intestinal diseases in pigs for veterinary practitioners, post-graduates and scientists in Denmark, Austria, Belgium (2003), China (2011), Germany (2005), Italy, Norway, Poland (2007), United Kingdom (2007), Spain, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.
