Tihomir Tomić was born in 1987 in Zagreb, Croatia. He graduated with the highest honours (summa cum laude magister) in 2014 at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, where he also defended his Ph.D. thesis under the title “Energy Recovery of Waste under the Influence of European Legislation” (2019, mentor: prof. Daniel Rolph Schneider). From 2009 to 2010 he has worked as an Assistant for registry establishment technical support for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), from 2013 to 2014 as an Expert Associate on the IPA project at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture. From July to August 2014, he was an intern at JANAF d.d. and from the beginning of 2015, he was employed as an Expert Associate in the system of science and higher education at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, where, from the beginning of 2017, he worked as an Assistant in the system of science and higher education. In January 2019, he joined the International Centre for Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and the Environment Systems (SDEWES Centre) as a Junior Project Manager, and since April of the same year started working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture.
His areas of expertise include waste management and recovery systems, energy recovery and conversion of waste and waste materials, integration of waste management systems and energy systems, renewable energy sources including blue energy systems, energy planning, and district heating systems and their analysis from a technical, economic and environmental point of view.
Since 2015, he is a member of the International Centre for Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and the Environment Systems (SDEWES Centre) and in the same period, he was a member of the organizing committees of a number of international conferences SDEWES and SEE SDEWES. He worked on 8 projects: UN project "Removal of barriers for energy efficiency in Croatia", FP7 project "Delivery of sustainable supply of non-food biomass to support a “resource-efficient” Bioeconomy in Europe (S2Biom)", IPA project "Diffusion of Cooling and Refreshing Technologies using the Solar Energy Resource in the Adriatic Regions (ADRIACOLD)", IEE project "Multi-level actions for enhanced Heating & Cooling plans (STRATEGO)", HRZZ project " Career development for young researchers - training of new doctors of science”, INTERREG project “Joint strategies for Climate Change Adaptation in coastal areas (Joint_SECAP)”, INTERREG project “Blue energy in ports and coastal urban areas (COASTENERGY)” and HRZZ research project “Smart energy carriers in recovery of plastic waste (NEOPLAST)”. So far, he has published more than twenty scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals and in proceedings of international scientific conferences. He is a reviewer for the journals Energy Conversion and Management, Journal of Cleaner Production, Journal of Environmental Management, Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy, Sustainability, Cleaner Engineering and Technology and Energies. For his research, in 2019, he was awarded Young Scientists Award by the Society of University Teachers and Other Scientists in Zagreb.
