Career Trajectory
Bio
Tiago Mateus is graduated in Biotechnology by the University of Évora and recently he obtained the master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from University of Aveiro. Tiago developed an outstanding Master thesis work and obtained the final grade of 20 (out of 20). Essentially, he carried out work related with Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) that is an incurable hereditary disease. His contributions regarding DM1 were the association of lipin with metabolic alterations in patients with DM1, the use of Attenuated Total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy to discriminate between characterization and distinction of the biochemical profile of patients with DM1 with different severities and the gathering of information about the most common outcomes and measures used to assess muscle strength in adult patients with DM1, which all of this contributed for future clinical practice guidance and research, and for further proper exploration of lipin proteins as therapeutic targets for metabolic syndrome. TM published 4 articles. Additionally, he has an abstract accepted for the 16th International congress of Neuromuscular Diseases (May 2021) that was published as conference paper in Journal of Neuromuscular Diseases. His current research interests are metabolic alterations, the role of lipin and molecular mechanisms underlying Myotonic Dystrophy type 1, BRI2 signalling pathways and BRI2-based therapeutics for AD. Recently, Tiago is involved in the organization of Brain Awareness Week 2021, a program financed by FENS entitled 'IMPROVE BRAIN PERFORMANCE' and coordinated by his supervisor Sandra Rebelo.
