Thomas Vaccari is head of the Membrane trafficking and tissue architecture Laboratory at IFOM.
In 1997 he graduated with honors in biology at the University of Milan, Italy. In 1998-99, he conducted research at San Raffaele Hospital and the Mario Negri Institute in Milan, In 2003, he completed his doctoral studies in cell and developmental biology, again with honors, at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany in the group of Anne Ephrussi. Subsequently, he worked as a post-doc at the University of California at Berkeley in the laboratory of Professor David Bilder. Studying a group of genes that act as tumor suppressors in Drosophila melanogaster, during his tenure at Berkeley, he focalized his research on factors that control endocytosis. In particular, he sought to define the function of endocytosis in the transduction of signals at the base of cell growth, which is frequently altered in tumor cells. In these studies, he was advantaged by the genetic tractability of the Drosophila genome and the high conservation of disease genes with humans.
After ten years abroad, in 2009 Thomas Vaccari moved back to Italy to take up a position as a group leader at IFOM, which he considered, since his university days, ' the best place in Italy to conduct fundamental research on the biology of cancer.' Enjoying scientific autonomy, with the help of grants from the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC), and Telethon, Thomas Vaccari is currently studying the endocytic control of Notch signaling using Drosophila as a model system. Aside from dedicating time to his Lab, Thomas Vaccari participates in international events as a speaker, is actively involved in IFOM's science divulgation initiatives, and in the educational activities of SEMM's (European School of Molecular Medicine), IFOM's Ph.D. school.
