Research focuses on improving our understanding of the heterogeneity of outcome after head injury, and the development of effective interventions. This work spans the range from very mild to extremely severe head injury and from specific impairments to general outcome in terms of recovery, disability and death with interest in biological markers and genetic factors may have implications for very late outcome.
In addition, there is a clinical-research focus on effects of head injury in vulnerable groups including in prisoners. Professor McMillan chaired production of the National Prisoner Healthcare Network Report for the Scottish Government on Brain Injury and Offending and leads the implementation of empirically derived service development in the NHS and Scottish Prison Service as recommended by the report. This includes screening for head injury and triage and guidance for NHS reception staff. There has been a research focus on considering multiple morbidities in offenders and the impact of head injury in relation to cognitive function, disability and crime.
