Since then, her team has focused on the lifelong health in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); hyperandrogenism, mental and metabolic health. Lately, her research has also focused on early onset of PCOS utilizing register data sets, mouse models and clinical sample sets. Prof. Piltonen has also interest on endometrial function and hormonal contraceptives and she has carried out several clinical trials focusing on this area. Her team has just finished a large clinical data collection in the Northern Finland birth cohort to screen gynecological symptoms and diseases in 2000 women in scope to assess how these conditions translate into adverse metabolic or psychological outcomes and quality of life. Prof. Piltonen is a past associate editor for Fertility and Sterility and currently an Associate Editor for European Journal of Endocrinology and Co-Editor in Chief of the Seminars in Reproductive Medicine. She is the president elect in the Androgen Excess and PCOS Society and the chair of the Scientific Committee of the Nordic Federation of Societies in Obstetrics and Gynecology (NFOG). Prof. Piltonen has published extensively in the field of PCOS, contraception and endometrial health with over 130 peer reviewed publications with H-index of 39.
