Bio
I studied Chemistry and Biochemistry, but then I trained in Biophysics, Physiology and Neuroscience. I have focused my research of more than 15 years in ion channels from different perspectives, encompassing their structure-function relationship and physiological regulation, in cellular systems and recently in animal models. At the end of my postdoc at Yale University, in 2006 I came back to my home country, Spain. I am currently tenured Professor at the University of La Laguna, after obtaining consecutively two national competitive positions (“Miguel Servet” and “Ramon y Cajal”). My lab has been uninterruptedly funded by competitive Spanish and European Grants (ERC Consolidator). My laboratory is focused in two main lines of research: a) novel mechanisms of regulation of voltage gated potassium Kv7 channels controlling neuronal excitability and b) structure-function of large-conductance calcium and voltage gated potassium channels (BK) in the context of neuronal calcium subcellular nanodomains. To this purpose we combine electrophysiology, advance microscopy, genetics, molecular biology and the study of animal models.
I combine my research activity with teaching to Medical School and Pharmacy School undergraduate students, as well as PhD (Master) students. I am also involved in science dissemination activities, with special emphasis in those programs to promote the role of women in science.
