Bio
M. Teresa Condesso de Melo is a Hydrogeologist with a Degree in Geology (UC Coimbra, Portugal), a Post-graduation and MSc Degree in Groundwater Hydrology (UPC Barcelona, Spain); and, a PhD in Georesources - Hydrogeology (UA Aveiro, Portugal), with a 3-year doctoral research training with the Hydrogeology Group (Wallingford, UK) of the British Geological Survey. She has more than 25 years of international professional experience in hydrogeology, groundwater quality and tracers, hydrogeophysics, groundwater monitoring and modelling.
Member of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) since 1993. Former founder and Secretary of the Portuguese Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (AIH-GP) (2002-09). A member of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA, USA) and of the Portuguese Association of Water Resources (APRH) since 2000. Associate Editor for Frontiers in Water, Water Quality and Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Water and Climate. Reviewer of Earth Science research projects and PhD/Post-doc proposals for the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), UNESCO, Belgian Development Cooperation program (VLIR-UOS) and the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET).
Senior lecturer and responsible for the Hydrogeology; Groundwater Pollution and Protection; Groundwater Management and Planning courses from Mining Engineering Undergraduate Programme, Environmental Engineering Integrated Master´s Programme and Georesources PhD programme, respectively. Co-coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree Programme on Groundwater and Global Change - Impacts and Adaptation (GroundwatCh) at IST Lisbon since 2015. Invited Lecturer in the Fieldwork Hydrology Course of the Master Program in Water Science and Engineering (IHE Delf, NL) and in the Study Project Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) of the Master Program in Hydro Science & Engineering (TUD Dresden, GE) since 2016.
In Portugal, she coordinated and participated in numerous hydrogeological investigations, groundwater quality assessments and environmental consultancy projects. She was consultant for the Portuguese Environmental Agency (APA), participating as hydrogeologist in the River Basin Management Plans of Vouga, Mondego and Lis rivers. She also co-coordinated the team that developed the methodology for the identification of groundwater of dependent ecosystems in Portugal. In Europe, she participated in several EU funded projects - PALAEAUX, BASELINE, BRIDGE, UTPIA and more recently, SOLPRECAIRE. Baseline and Bridge projects are now important supports for the implementation of EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Groundwater Directive (GWD). She also participated in relevant international development projects and collaborations in Tunisia, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Brazil, Guatemala, Argentina, Nicaragua and Mexico.
