I've completed my PhD in conservation genetics of colobus monkeys in Guinea Bissau. During my PhD, field work was intensively carried during the past three years where non-invasive samples (fecal) for genetic analyses were collected for several social groups of both western red and western black- and-white colobus monkeys in Cantanhez National Park, Guinea Bissau. Habituation, individual identification and behavioral data collection of one focal group for each species were also conducted within this period. Laboratory work was carried out between 2009 and 2011 and has included fecal DNA extraction, PCR-based amplification of a fragment of the mitochondrial DNA as well as 15 microsatellite loci. I also conducted extensive statistical analysis on these data using several and the most recent software available for population genetic and socio-genetic analysis (e.g. spatial and non-spatial population genetic structure, sex-biased dispersal, relatedness, demographic history). I am currently conducting my post-doc and I am mainly interested in combining different types of data in order to address questions related with evolution and adaptation of primate social systems. Habitat loss/fragmentation and poaching constitute the main threats to the survival of most primate natural populations across the globe. My main research interests are focused on combining socio-ecological, genetic, landscape and susceptibility to infectious diseases data in order to understand what are the main determinants for population viability in primate threatened species exhibiting different social systems (group size, dispersal system, dispersal ability). Such broader (different primate species) and combined (different types of data) approaches are still lacking in primate studies and are crucial to fully understand, model and predict their survival ability when facing such widespread and increasingly threats. This information is extremely valuable and crucial in order to best address conservation decisions and efforts.
