Bio
I completed my PhD in 2023 at The University of Adelaide School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences, under the supervision of Prof. Darren Trott and Prof.Rietie Venter. My doctoral research, titled 'Phenotypic and Genetic Analysis of Antimicrobial Resistance in Bovine Respiratory Disease Pathogens from Australian Feedlots,' focused on assessing antimicrobials to combat the increasing incidence of multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens. Additionally, I prepared BRD-pathogen culture collections for whole genome sequencing analysis, which holds significant implications for vaccine development in the health, agriculture, and food industries. My research consistently produced high-quality and impactful outcomes, earning me the 2023 university doctoral research medal for Academic Excellence Postgraduate-Research. Notably, I have authored three first-author publications and contributed to another publication as a co-author, which have garnered recognition in their respective fields.
Prior to my PhD, I completed my Honours Degree at the School of Molecular and Biomedical Science at the University of Adelaide in 2014. Additionally, I hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Baghdad University, which I completed in 1999. Presently, I am employed as a Senior Technical Officer in the Microbiology/Virology Molecular Diagnostics Lab at SA Pathology since 2010. Throughout my PhD research, I also worked as a Senior Researcher Assistant at the University of South Australia and worked as a Lab Demonstrator in Microbiology and Virology subjects at both the University of Adelaide and UNISA from 2018 to 2023.
My passion lies in understanding the mechanisms of pathogen growth, identification, and characterization, of bacteria, and employing various techniques for diagnosis, identification, and maintenance. I am particularly interested in evaluating virulence factors and assessing the potential of candidate vaccine antigens.
