Among academic performances, his most notable contribution is in neuromuscular disorders, especially spinal muscular atrophy(SMA). He has dedicated himself for more than ten years to basic research and providing multidisciplinary care for patients with SMA. He has published several academic articles in prestigious neuroscience and clinical journals, including NEJM, Neurology, Journal of Pediatrics, Prenatal Diagnosis, and eLife. In these works, Dr. Chen has contributed pivotal knowledge advancing other researchers’ knowledge on SMA clinical care, pathomechanism, and potential treatment.
Dr. Chen has rich experiences in performing clinical trials for rare diseases and has joined several global clinical trials for neuromuscular disorders, including SMA and Duchenne muscular dystrophy(DMD). He has been a visiting scholar for SMA neuropathology research at University of Southern California, USA (2019-2021). He also worked as a short-term visiting scientist in 2017 at University of Cologne, Germany. His knowledge of SMA and other neuromuscular diseases has been critical to advancing the neurology and neuroscience field. Different domestic and international associations have awarded him for his clinical and research work in SMA and other congenital neuromuscular disorders, including the Asian Society for Pediatric Research, World Muscle Society, Taiwan Pediatric Association, Taiwan Child Neurology Society, and the Rare Disease Foundation of Taiwan.
Till now, Dr. Chen and his coworkers are still relentlessly pursuing novel curative therapies and authentic biomarkers for SMA and trying to decipher underlying SMA pathophysiological mechanisms by using SMA animal models and human stem cells. He is currently serving as an editorial member in several academic journals, including, PLOS One, BMC Pediatrics, BMC Neurology, Medicina, and World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics.
