I started my life handling animals when I was a child in a small city of South of Brazil, where I helped my grandparents with his family dairy herd. Fascinated for livestock, I attended an Agriculture School during high school and had the opportunity to improve my dairy farming abilities in an practical exchange program in USA (Wisconsin). When I got back to Brazil, I became a veterinarian with the University of Passo Fundo, Brazil, and completed my master’s degree and doctorate in the School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science at University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP), Brazil. During my master’s research, I studied the effect of coagulase-negative staphylococci causing subclinical mastitis on milk yield and composition of dairy cows. In addition, I contributed to the evolution of identification of mastitis causing pathogens using the method of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). During my PhD, I performed a study characterizing the epidemiological profile of clinical mastitis, and the use of antimicrobials for treatment of this disease in Brazilian dairy herds. Also in the doctoral period, I conducted epidemiological studies related to mastitis control and milk microbiology in the Quality Milk Production Services at Cornell University.
After a period as researcher associate at University of São Paulo, I performed a postdoctoral program in the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at Cornell University, where I conducted studies on mastitis control and development of alternatives for the antimicrobial use in dairy cows, such as vaccines and immuno-modulators.
Currently, I am a Ruminant Technical Assistant Manager with Merck Animal Health, where I integrate a team of experts that assists the sales force of the company and dairy farms to achieve their goals throughout the United States, but mainly in the Midwest region.
My main goal is to promote the health and well-being of dairy animals by conducting research and extension focused on development of the dairy industry and food security of the population.
