Bio
Dr Thao Nguyen is currently a Research Fellow at the University of South Australia, Clinical & Health Sciences. She completed her Bachelor of Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, and PhD at the University of South Australia in 2002 and 2015 respectively. Her PhD studies investigated the interactions between human stromal cells and haematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in immune cell regulation, bone remodelling, and stromal niche-mediated support of haematopoietic stem cell homing, adhesion, engraftment, early haematopoietic recovery and long-term reconstitution following stem cell transplantation. Prior to PhD, she contributed to medical research in Rotavirus vaccination to newborns, dendritic cell immunisation to melanoma patients, characterisation of proteins vital to IVF, SNPs in thrombosis, breast cancer metastasis, multiplex-ready PCR, in public and industry sectors in Adelaide and Brisbane. She had her early post-doc trainings in the field of blood stem cell regulation in health and diseases at SAHMRI, and NHMRC Early Career Fellowship in the field of myeloid leukaemia at the Centre for Cancer Biology. Dr Nguyen’s current research focuses on targeting the cancer relapse driving stem cell populations in leukaemia, by employing nanomedicine-based approaches to enhance drug delivery to cancer-relapse-driving cell populations, and thus enhance drug efficacy to improve patient survival.
