个人简介
I was born in East Germany in 1967. After a 3-year military service I studied biochemistry at the Universities of Leipzig (Germany) and Glasgow (UK) form 1988-1993. I conducted my PhD studies on the enzymes of the shikimate pathway at the University of Glasgow (UK) from 1993-1997, followed by a 1-year post-doctoral stay at the same University. During this time I participated in the discovery of the shikimate pathway in parasites offering novel strategies to fight malaria (2 publications in Nature). Furthermore, I advanced the structural biology of shikimate pathway enzymes. Awarded with a Marie-Curie fellowship I worked at the Institute for the Biology and Chemistry of Proteins (Lyon, France) from 1998-2000 on aspects of multidrug resistance. During the following 4,5 years I worked as laboratory head in the Research Department of the multinational pharmaceutical company Sanofi (Lyon, France). I have worked mainly on the development of novel vaccine prototypes and co-author 12 patents. Financed by a Ramón and Cajal fellowship I initiated my work at the Estación Experimental del Zaidín (EEZ, Granada, Spain) in 2004. In 2007 I obtained a permanent position as Staff Scientist at the EEZ, was promoted to Scientific Investigator in 2012 and to Research Professor in 2021. I now head a laboratory (http://krell-laboratory.com/, @KrellLaboratory) that is dedicated to study of bacterial sensing and signal transduction.
My major scientific achievements include
- Identification of signal molecules that stimulate 8 transcriptional regulators, 3 sensor kinases and 18 chemoreceptors, among which the first chemoreceptors for histamine, polyamines, purines, acetylcholine or nitrate.
- Definition of a novel family of sensor kinases (TodS-like)
- Discovery of a novel sensor domain (HBM domain)
- Discovery of a novel mechanism by which CheR interacts with a specific chemoreceptor
- Identification of amino acid specific receptors in all domains of life
- Identification of a plant compound that interferes with bacterial quorum sensing
- Discovery of a novel mechanism by which environmental signals control bacterial antibiotics production.
I have published 165 articles in international journals like Nature, Nature Structural Biology, PNAS, Science Signaling, Genome Research, Nucleic Acids Research, NPG Biofilms Microbiome, mBio or mSystems.
I have been invited to contribute reviews to prestigious journals like Annu. Rev. Microbiol. (2010), Microb. Mol. Biol. Rev. (2017 and 2021), Curr. Opin. Biotechnol. (2013, 2017), FEMS Microbiol. Rev. (2015, 2018 and 2022), Microb. Mol. Biol. Rev. (2017, 2021), or Comput. Struct. Biotechnol. J. (2021). I have also made important contributions to the field of structural biology and co-author 35 3D protein structures deposited in the protein data bank. Of these, 17 are structures of different sensor domains in complex with their respective signals providing detailed insight into the molecular determinants of sensing.
