Dr. Bates has held academic and research posts at the University of Sheffield, the University of Southampton, The Royal College of Surgeons of England, University College London the University of Nottingham and research fellowships in Sweden, the USA and Italy. Dr. Bates has over 37 years experience in biomedical research with ongoing research projects in cancer pharmacology, mitochondrial metabolism, mitochondrial pharmacology, mitochondrial toxicity and bacterial meningitis.
Dr. Bates provides consultancy in the areas of mitochondrial pharmacology, mitochondrial biochemistry, mitochondrial toxicology and mitochondrial metabolism, both to international pharmaceutical companies and other major industrial clients/collaborators as well as to other research partners in the UK and abroad. Dr. Bates is an active member of the Biochemical Society, the British Pharmacological Society and the British Neuroscience Association and has spoken at many international scientific conferences in the UK, USA, Italy, France, Germany, Holland, and China.
Dr. Bates is a regular grant reviewer for many U.K., USA and European research charities/organisations including the Medical Research Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, the Wellcome Trust, the European Union, the Italian Department of Science and Technology, The Portuguese Ministry of Education and Science, The Alzheimer’s Association (USA), The Parkinson’s Disease Society, AGE UK and The Special Trustees Fund of St. Thomas’ Hospital.
Dr. Bates research publications have been cited over 6,700 times and he currently has an H (Hirsch) index of 44.
Dr. Bates is the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Drugs With A Difference Limited), a company he founded in 2013 and Marlin Therapeutics Limited, founded in 2017, both based at the Science and Technology Park, University Boulevard, Nottingham. Dr. Bates founded the companies specifically to rapidly re-purpose existing drugs (not previously used in cancer, Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis) and develop Intellectual Property (IP) in the form of patents which will be licensed to international pharmaceutical companies, and bring them rapidly to the clinic for use in the treatment of several different cancer types, such as lung, breast, colon, prostate, brain, stomach and the nasopharynx, as well as in Alzheimer's disease and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Dr. Bates is also a one of only 32 members in the U.K. of the external assessor panel for the NHS Evidence section of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), where his specialist areas of interest are: Drugs and Devices, Research, Interventional Procedures and Clinical.
