Syed Imtiaz was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh. He received the B.Sc. and M. Sc. degrees in chemical engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 1997 and 1999, respectively, the M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering with focus on environmental engineering from the University of Calgary, Calgary, AB, Canada, in 2002, and the Ph.D. degree in process control from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in 2007. From 1997 to 1999, he was a Lecturer with BUET. From September 2006, to March 2010, he was a Staff Engineer with the Advanced Process Control (APC) Division, Aspen Technology, Calgary, AB, Canada. As an APC Engineer, he has implemented model predictive controller in a wide range of industries and units, including, crude unit, fluid catalytic cracker, hydrogen desulfurization of petroleum refinery, hot and cold side of ethylene plant, PTA plant, ethanol plant, and polymer plant. As a consultant, he worked internationally in the USA, Argentina, and Portugal. In April 2010, he joined the Process Engineering Department, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NL, Canada, as an Assistant Professor and later promoted to Associate Professor in 2016 and Professor in 2021. Since 2019, he has been the Head of the Department of Process Engineering. In addition to developing applications for process industries, he is currently involved in developing controller and monitoring system for managed pressure drilling and marine autonomous surface ship system. His research interests include process monitoring, nonlinear model predictive control, and artificial intelligence. Dr. Imtiaz is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
