My primary research area of interest is neurodevelopment. I use Neurotransmitter Switching (NTS), a novel, reversible form of plasticity in the nervous system, to address the mechanism of self-organisation of brain into functional circuits, including the mechanisms that mediate the targeting of the appropriate synaptic partners and the function of external stimuli in shaping these circuits. These studies will allow me to understand some of the “rules” governing NTS- Is the ability to switch determined at the individual neuron or at the circuit level? Are particular nodes within a circuit more amenable to switching than others? With recently developed genetic and imaging techniques these rules can be used to examine how pre-existing circuits are “re-purposed” for new behaviours during the lifetime of an animal. Understanding the extent and window period of plasticity in brain circuits will help in building better in silico models of the brain and provide a novel angle for understanding neurological disorders and for developing therapies.
