Dr Sviatlana Karpava is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics/TESOL and Linguistics Section Coordinator (2020-present) at the Department of English Studies, University of Cyprus. She is also the Coordinator of the Testing, Teaching and Translation Lab (2019-present). Dr Karpava was a Lecturer in Linguistics, Course Leader MA in TESOL, University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus (2012-2019). Education: PhD in Linguistics, University of Cyprus (2014); MA in Applied and Theoretical Linguistics, University of Cyprus (2008); PGCert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, University of Central Lancashire, UK (2015); MA in TESOL, St Clements University (2005); BA in Foreign Languages and Literature, Belarus State University (2003); K.Y.S.A.T.S.: Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2005); DIKATSA/DOATAP: The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece (2009).
She is a Management Committee Member and WG5 Co-Leader of the "European Family Support Network Cost Action. A bottom-up, evidence-based and multidisciplinary approach" (2019-2023) as well as a working group member of the "European Network for Combining Language Learning with Crowdsourcing Techniques" Cost Project (2017-2021). Sviatlana initiated Erasmus plus project "Planting languages-seeds of success" (2019-2021). She is the general secretary of the Cyprus Linguistic Society (CyLing), board member of the Cyprus Teachers of English Association (CyTEA), Steering Group Member of the Association for Educational Assessment-Europe (AEA), active member and research collaborator of the Diversity, Equality and Inclusivity Office (UCY), Cyprus Acquisition Team (CAT) and Harmonious Bilingualism Network (HaBilnet). She is the Principal Investigator of the two internally funded (University of Cyprus) research projects: MIGDISCY- Migration, Discourse, Cyprus and Heritage Language Maintenance, Variation, and Change (2021-2023).
Dr Karpava is a member of such international organisations and associations as the International Association of Multilingualism (IAM), International Speech Communication Association (ISCA), International Association of Applied Linguistics (AILA), Cypriot Society for the Study of English (CySSE), European Society for the Study of English, European Association for Practitioner Research on Improving Learning (EAPRIL), European Second Language Association (EuroSLA), Adult Learning in Europe (EPALE), South Eastern Europe Teachers’ Associations (SEETA), International Association on Bilingualism, International Association for the Study of Child Language Acquisition (IASCL), British Association of Applied Linguistics (BAAL), Linguistic Society of Europe (SLE), International Pragmatics Association, Federation of European Literacy Associations, MultiLingNet, Association for Bilingualism in Cyprus, Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE), International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (IATEFL), Slavic Linguistics Society (SLS), Literacy Education and Second Language Acquisition by Adults (LESLLA).
Dr Karpava is an evaluator of European project proposals submitted in the framework of COST and European Regional Development Fund. She is a senior association editor and production head of the English as a Foreign language International Journal, former Asian EFL Journal, an associate editor and style editor of the MEXTESOL Journal. She is also an ad hoc reviewer of such journals as the International Journal of Bilingualism, Frontiers in Psychology, Language Sciences, Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism, Scando-Slavica, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, Journal of Multilingual Theories and Practices, Psychology of Language and Communication, Journal of Home Language Research, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Culture and Education, Poetics Journal, REiLA: Journal of Research and Innovation in Language, Education Sciences, Journal Balcania et Slavia: Studies in Linguistics, Societies.
Dr Karpava is the author of the book: Vulnerable Domains for Cross-Linguistic Influence in L2 Acquisition of Greek. (2015) Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang. She has also presented her research at numerous international conferences and published her research work in such journals as the Languages, European Journal of Psychology of Education, Journal of the European Second Language Association, HumaNetten Journal, Journal of Monolingual and Bilingual Speech (JMBS), Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, Russian Journal of Linguistics, Slavica Helsingiensia, Sociolinguistic Studies, Journal of Second and Multiple Language Acquisition, Journal of Portuguese Linguistics as well as in book chapters published by Cambridge Scholars, Springer Nature, Springer Nature, Retorika, Peter Lang, Versita.
