Career Trajectory
Bio
My professional experience combines of 36 years of clinical and academic experience in pulmonology, pediatrics along with scientific activities in immunology and bacteriology. Being one of the longest serving faculty at our university, I have had the opportunity to witness the progress in our institution capacity in research and cooperation with foreign institution. I, myself, participated in a number of projects in collaboration with US and European partners. I have participated in a large number of projects focused on clinical and public health problems in children. As a co-investigator on this project funded by the US Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) I have consulted children presenting with chronic cough and wheezing in order to identify those with undiagnosed asthma from different occupational and residential groups. We have evaluated the risk factors associated with living conditions of such children and have elaborated recommendations for treatment and prevention of exacerbations. The results were presented at national and international congresses.
Another healthcare challenge in Moldova is the Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disorder with a high prevalence among newborns and difficult to treat chronic manifestations in adult population. As part of a clinical trials, I have recruited and observed adult patients with cystic fibrosis in order to sturdy the efficacy of treatment with Bramitob in pulmonary infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results of this regional study were presented at international conferences.
I have also led a group of scientists from the Republic of Moldova that collected and systemized the data of patients with cystic fibrosis. Subsequently, the database from Moldova was included in the Worldwide Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry and in the Cystic Fibrosis Society Patient Registry. The comparative analysis of Moldovan and European data allowed making conclusions and recommendations for patients with cystic fibrosis.
With a team of collaborators, I have evaluated the association of bronchopulmonary diseases with ENT pathologies in children. As primary goal of the project, we have performed a number of functional tests, immunological assessments in order to determine the correlation of the respiratory comorbidities in children with ENT disease.
My most recent project is focused on characterization of epidemiological, clinical, immunological, and molecular-genetics features of immunodeficiency in neonates, infants and older children. The goal of this project is to develop effective methods of immune rehabilitation and timely diagnosis of diseases and their complications, selection of children with suspected primary immunodeficiency for stratification based on their immunological profiles, that include evaluation of lymphocyte surface markers, serum immunoglobulins, and genotyping of the primary immunodeficiency.
