Career Trajectory
Bio
Suzanne Colby, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior and of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Brown University. A nationally recognized expert in adolescent tobacco research, Dr. Colby has led collaborative efforts to enhance research on and development of cessation treatments for adolescent smokers. She recently served as President of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT), following previous SRNT roles as Member Delegate for North America, Annual Meeting Program Chair, and Founding Chair of the Adolescent Research Network. She is also Deputy Regional Editor (Office of the Americas) for the journal Addiction, which is a publication of the Society for the Study of Addiction.
Dr. Colby is currently a co-lead investigator on two research studies involving adolescent smokers. The first study, with Dr. Jennifer Tidey, is a Research Component of the Center to Evaluate Nicotine in Cigarettes (CENIC; U54DA031659, Principal Investigators Donny & Hatsukami). This is a laboratory-based study of the effects of nicotine content in cigarettes and nicotine concentration and flavors in electronic cigarettes on responses to these products in adolescents who smoke cigarettes. The second study, with Dr. Rachel Cassidy (R01 DA047356) is a 5-week randomized clinical trial (RCT) testing the effects of cigarette nicotine reduction on smoking behavior in adolescents; this trial also explores whether reduced nicotine in cigarettes leads to substitution of alternative combusted and non-combusted tobacco use in adolescents.
Dr. Colby is a Co-Investigator on several other NIH research grants including: 1) a prospective trial examining the impact of adolescent exposure to alcohol content in social and entertainment media (PI: K.M. Jackson); 2) an RCT testing the implementation of culturally-specific motivational intervention (MI) for Latinx people who engage in heavy drinking (PI: C.S. Lee); 3) a therapeutic process study evaluating the hypothesized mechanisms that underly the effects of standard versus culturally-specific MI for reducing heavy drinking; and 4) a pilot RCT of technology-based smoking cessation intervention for youth aging out of foster care (PI: J. Braciszewski). She is Director of Training and Pilot Projects for the Brown Alcohol Research Center on HIV (ARCH). She serves on the Mentoring Steering Committee and is a Mentor Training Facilitator for Advance Clinical Trials Research (Advance CTR), a statewide hub for translational research.
