Bio
Susana T. Leitão is a postdoctoral researcher working on plants biotic and abiotic stress interactions and molecular breeding at Carlota Vaz Patto’s laboratory, the Genetics and Genomics of Plant Complex Traits (PlantX) Lab of ITQB NOVA, Portugal
In March 2020, she finished her Ph.D. degree in Plant Sciences, NOVA University of Lisbon (ITQB NOVA), under the supervision of Carlota Vaz Patto, and co-supervision of Diego Rubiales and Susana Araújo. Her Ph.D. thesis aimed to unravelling the genetic control of combined biotic/abiotic stress resistance in Phaseolus vulgaris L. using the fusarium wilt – drought interaction as case study. During her Ph.D. studies, she was able to identify resistance sources to fusarium wilt and water deficit among the Portuguese common bean germplasm, and molecular markers and candidate genes underlying these resistances. For that, she used different phenotypic (fungal disease severity evaluations and photosynthesis-related parameters) and genotypic techniques, and genomics (GWAS) and transcriptomics approaches. Parts of the work were developed in IAS-CSIC (Córdoba, Spain) at Diego Rubiales’ Lab.
Earlier, in 2007, she obtained her Master degree in Biological Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal, and she performed the studies that conducted to her M.Sc. thesis at the Faculty of Life Sciences of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, as an Erasmus student.
During 2008-2009, she was a research trainee at the Biotechnology Centre of the Azores, University of Azores, Terceira, working on the molecular characterization of Portuguese Vitis vinifera ssp. sylvestris genotypes and of Azorean populations of Plasmopara viticola pathogen using molecular markers.
From 2009 until 2014, she was a research fellow at the BCV and PlantX labs (ITQB NOVA), working on different projects aiming maize, Lathyrus spp. and common bean genetic diversity characterization, disease resistance evaluation, and linkage mapping development.
She published 16 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, 8 of them as first author, 5 as the corresponding author, co-authored 2 book chapters, and 1 handbook. She contributed to 4 scientific dissemination publications. Her h-index is 6 and her publications have over 122 citations (Scopus, Feb 2022). She contributed with 29 national and international congress presentations, 4 of them oral. In 2017, at the 15th Congress of Mediterranean Phytopathological Union - Plant Health Sustaining Mediterranean Ecosystems, in Córdoba, Spain, she was one of the Best Poster Award winners. She participated as a research fellow in 4 national (FCT-funded) and 4 EU-funded projects, and in research networks, namely within COST Actions FA1208, FA1306 and FP1406.
