Bio
Susana Mouga was born in January 1984 in Lisbon. Susana received her MSc degree in Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, in 2007. For her master degree, she did a clinical and research internship in which she investigated the intellectual profile of children with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at the Centro de Desenvolvimento da Criança, Hospital Pediátrico (HP), Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC). She completed his PhD in Health Sciences - Biomedical Sciences in 2021, in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) while holder of a PhD grant from the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, FCT (SFRH/BD/102779/2014). During her PhD she was particularly interested in the exhaustive clinical characterization of children and adolescents with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders and the application technologies as eye-tracking, virtual reality and neuroimaging techniques (brain functional magnetic resonance imaging - fMRI), and ecological tasks in the study of executive functions and social cognition in ASD.
During the past sixteen years, she has been collaborating in National and European research projects in the area of neurodevelopmental disorders, namely, autism spectrum disorder, always combining basic research and clinical work.
She is currently Researcher at Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT) based at the Institute of Nuclear Sciences Applied to Health, UC, in the AIMS-2-Trials Consortium (funded by the EU- in collaboration with KCL, Karolinska) in 2 different projects focused on bridging the gap between basic biology and the clinic by offering personalised therapeutic approaches in ASD. Aside intensive international collaborations in European teams (STIPED, BRAINTRAIN, AIMS-2-Trials) and research training abroad (Clinical trials, Eye-tracking) I also collaborate with the Paediatric Hospital, Coimbra Hospital and University Centre, where I perform clinical assessment and research. Susana is also an integrated member of the Coimbra Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Translational Research (CIBIT), doing research in both basic and translational neuroscience in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Her achievements are reflected in 26 original peer-reviewed papers published in high-quality international journals (Q1), 7 as first author, 1 conference paper, 29 conference proceedings, with a total of 2297 citations, with a continuous increase of citations every year and an H-index of 16, as assessed by GoogleScholar. She had also the opportunity to disseminate her research findings as author and co-author of 28 scientific posters and 26 oral communications at national and renowned international conferences, for instance International Society for Autism Research (INSAR), European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) and Society for Neuroscience meetings. She has been requested to collaborate in review processes as invited reviewer for 7 journals such as Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Scientific Reports, and Frontiers in Psychiatry, as well as a review editor for Frontiers in Psychology.
She has received 7 awards and/or honors, including the 1st Prize for Oral Communication in the VII Seminar of Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics - Neurodevelopmental Paediatrics Society – Portuguese Paediatrics Society, Portugal.
She actively engages in science outreach activities, organizing public engagement events at schools, Brain Awareness Week, European Researchers' Night and courses.
She has been invited to lecture in the MSc in Molecular and Translational Neuroscience, FMUC, supervised 2 Professional 1-year Internships of the Order of Portuguese Psychologists and she is supervising 2 master’s thesis and 3 Curricular Internships of MSc in Clinical Neuropsychology. She tutored several rotations from the International Research Exchange Project.
Her diverse experiences fostered long-term international collaborations, leading to an invitation to join the Network of Proposers for a COST Action Proposal (pending results).
Her research interests are Neuropsychology, Clinical and cognitive neuroscience, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Child Development and Mental Health, Neuroimaging.
