个人简介
Professor Susan (Suzy) Edwards is the research Director of the Early Childhood Futures research concentration in the Institute for Learning Sciences & Teacher Education (ILSTE). Professor Edwards has over twenty years’ experience in the early childhood education and care sector. She has worked in kindergarten, long-day care, occasional care, after-school care and tertiary education settings. With a strong commitment to realising young children’s learning potential Professor Edwards’ research interests canvass pedagogical approaches to play-based learning, and the role of digital technologies and popular-culture in the contemporary early childhood curriculum. Susan is also interested in developing young children’s content knowledge in areas such as sustainability and health and wellbeing using play-based approaches to learning.
Professor Edwards is an active researcher in the area of play-based learning, young children’s content knowledge and digital technologies. In 2012 she completed an Australian Research Council Discovery Project (2010-2012) investigating play-based approaches to teaching and learning about sustainability in early childhood education. Findings from this project were cited in the UNESCO Final Report for the UN Decade for Sustainable Education 2005-2014. More recently she has been involved in two additional Australian Research Council Discovery Projects (2014-2016; 2015-2017) examining the relationship between children’s healthy eating and sustainability education and the role of digital and traditional activities in young children’s digital play. Susan is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 20 book chapters and 8 books. She currently co-edits the Asia Pacific Journal of Teacher Education with colleague Associate Professor Joce Nuttall, and is on the editorial board of Early Years: an International Journal of Research and Development, and Journal of Early Childhood Research. She is also a co-editor with Liz Brooker and Mindy Blaise of the SAGE International Handbook of Play and Learning in Early Childhood (2014).
In 2016, Professor Edwards is a keynote speaker for the Early Childhood Australia bi-annual conference ‘This is childhood –pedagogy and practice in early years.’ Suzy is also currently working on a new book titled ‘Engaging early learners in a digital age’ with Christine Stephen (University of Stirling). Her current research collaborations involve colleagues from Monash University, Deakin University and Curtin University in Australia, and the University of Oxford, University of Edinburgh and Erickson Institute internationally.
Professor Edwards’ commitment to high quality pedagogical practice in her own teaching has twice been recognised at the national level. She received a citation and a full teaching award from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
